Upcoming Dates and Updated Information

The latest advocacy newsletter from the Coalition is available and was sent electronically to our members. If you would like a copy, you just need to become a paid member of NEOCH here.  We have made updates to the NEOCH website recently including an update of the 15 items available to auction for anyone who donates to the Hand Up Gala will have their name entered in a random drawing. The Hand Up Gala is set for October 21 with a kickoff luncheon for those who frequent the shelters and meal programs. 

NEOCH staff met with County Council member Julian Rogers yesterday to discuss regulating the shelters.  He agreed that there needs to be some kind or regulation in law, and was willing to put his name on the website that if presented with a law, he would support it.  This means that the Homeless Congress has gathered six members of the Cuyahoga County Council who have publicly proclaimed their support.  We hope to have a piece of legislation to discuss in the fall.  We have talked to two or three other members, but did not get a firm commitment.  

Finally, on the NEOCH website, we have updated the list of homeless liaisons for each school district in Cuyahoga County.  This resource page is available to children who are struggling with the housing, and need help to maintain their school participation.  It is federal and state law that children and youth who become homeless do not have to have their education disrupted, but who do you go to in order to get help with transportation?   This page gives the 2011 to 2012 liaisons for every school district in the County.  All of the charter and private schools must have a liaison, but we do not have the means to list all those contacts.  Contact your school administrator if you or your children need help maintaining your a stable educational environment during a period of homelessness.  If you have problems, feel free to call NEOCH at 216/432-0540.

Look for our annual membership renewal form in the mail over the next week. We need you to renew your membership, because we are only as strong as our membership. You can renew your membership from our website under About Us/Join NEOCH. It is a few easy, quick steps.

Health Care Report Released December 11, 2008

The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless surveyed 320 homeless people about their experiences with the health care system over the last month. We will release the results of the survey including homeless people’s experiences with dental and mental health care; the length of wait in the emergency rooms; and which facilities they use most. We asked people about how chronic health conditions led to their homelessness, and can provide demographic information. Please join us as we release this report and hear from a few homeless people who will put a face on this issue. We will release the report on December 11 at 6 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral at East 22^nd and Euclid Ave.

Woodchopper’s Ball December 13

The NEOCH newsletter incorrectly stated that the Woodchopper’s ball was the first Saturday in December. It turns out that it is in fact December 13 at the Kent Stage in Ken Ohio. This is an annual fundraiser of the Coalition organized by guitarist Brian Henke. The musical line up and ticket information can be viewed at www.kentstage.org or calling 330/677-5005. If you enjoy good music, we hope that you can attend.

Homeless Memorial Day Set for December 21, 2008

For the past 22 years, NEOCH has hosted the Candlelight Vigil to remember those who passed away over the last year. Sunday December 21, 2008 marks National Homeless Memorial Day as well as the start of winter, and we will mark the day at St. Augustine in Tremont. The Vigil will feature the reading of the names of those who passed away and we will hear remarks from one elected official at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday December 21. All are welcome to join us after St. Augustine’s lunch at 2486 West 14^th St.

Homeless Coalition Wants Your Opinion

As you are aware, the Coalition nearly went out of business last year. We have recovered, but are working to figure out our role in the community with the help of a consultant. We want to make sure that we are positioned to find stable and reliable funding for the next five years while we work on addressing homelessness.

3. Volunteer Open House July 19

1. The AmeriCorps*VISTA members of the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless will host a Homeless Teach In on Wednesday June 27, 2007 at 6 p.m. to focus on the homelessness and mental health issues. The Teach In is a 3 hour tour of homelessness in Cleveland with speakers from the homeless community and profiles of programs that serve homeless people with a mental illness. Please RSVP to Emily at 216/432-0540 to join us for this event. We will provide a light meal, and materials to provide a glimpse of homelessness in Cleveland.

2. Our membership renewal went out this week, so if you have forgotten to renew your membership for 2007 please do it this week. Celebrate freedom in America on this upcoming July 4th weekend by renewing your membership in the Homeless Coalition. You can do that online at our website at www.neoch.org or by returning the envelope that we sent to you.

3. NEOCH is hosting an open house on July 19 to provide information to potential volunteers. We will talk about all of the exciting opportunities for helping the Coalition. There are special events, planning parties, major donor efforts and increasing membership in the Coalition. We need your time and talent. If you are a good writer or have good people skills we need your help. Join us on Thursday July 19 at 7 p.m. and learn how your talents can be put to good use.
