Hand Up Auction Held

Luke at the Hand Up Gala October 2011
Blanket Drive is Underway

Alcoa employees are collecting blankets and delivering them this week.  We had a friend from Community Shares pull the names from the Hand Up Gala auction today, which was the kickoff of the blanket drive.  Those who won an auction item will be receiving their thank you gift certificates in the first part of next week.  We can accept blankets on any weekday, and every other Saturday.  Call for more details or schedule a time to drop off the blankets.  Our goal is to collect 5,000 blankets this winter. Thank you for your support, and those tired and weary who will benefit from your donation thank you.

Still Time to Donate

Over 30 local Businesses Have Donated Items to the 2011 Auction

The Hand Up Gala opening event took place Friday October 21, 2011 at lunch time.  You may have seen the event featured on WEWS Channel 5.  Above are the two chefs from the Renaissance Hotel, Mark Lyons (left) and  John Aldewereld who prepared a fantastic meal of spinach quiche, stuffed chicken with roasted garlic, rice with sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, and dutch apple pie.  We were able to serve 215 hungry individuals, and we want to thank City Councilperson Mamie Mitchell and Laurie and Morris from Congressman Kucinich's office for helping.  Board members and staff of Catholic Charities as well as the NEOCH all helped to serve and seat people.  There will be more pictures on our website soon.

We are not doing the drawing for this event until November 7, and so you have a couple of weeks to get your donation in to participate in the auction.  You can donate online at www.neoch.org or by sending in a donation of $45 to NEOCH indicating the Hand Up Gala in the memo line.  For every $45 donated, we will enter your name into the auction to win some of the great prizes.  Just to name a few of the auction items:  tickets to Hale Farm, Lake Erie Captains and Akron Aeros tickets, a gift basket from Trader Joes and $150 gift certificate to the Pine Lakes Lodge Bed and Breakfast.  Get your donation in now to help NEOCH with our winter blanket drive!!!

Thanks to the committee who put this together including Holly, Larry, Luke, Dorothy, Nicole, Dominica, Michelle and Colleen.

More on the Hand Up Gala

Hand Up Not a Hand Out
Plans are moving forward on the Hand Up Gala 2011.  There are some fantastic auction items for everyone who donates.  We have a number of celebrities signed up to volunteer for the event including Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell, State Senator Shirley Smith, State Representative Nickie Antonio and Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Yvonne Conwell will be helping to seat people and serve homeless people at the event.  This will mark the kickoff of our winter preparation.  The Bishop Cosgrove Center will use the proceeds from this event to help the transportation needs of homeless people.  We hope that you will support this important event.  We will have table cloths, center pieces, and a four star meal prepared by John Aldewereld of the Renaissance Hotel Sans Souci Restaurant.   It will be a fantastic event for people who do not often get to enjoy a four star meal with music and a relaxing atmosphere.

Hand Up Gala Coming Soon

A Great Kickoff for the Winter: October 21, 2011

The Second Annual Hand Up Gala is well under way, and should be awesome with all that we learned last year.  The dinner will take place on October 21, 2011 with a fine dining lunch for 200 homeless and hungry individuals.  We are partnering with the Bishop Cosgrove Center again this year.  This fundraiser is intended to raise support in the community for our efforts to provide blankets and winter gear to homeless people this winter. The Bishop Cosgrove Center is going to use the funds raised from this event to provide transportation assistance to homeless people.

Everyone who donates more than $45 to this event is entered into a drawing for some wonderful gifts provided by area businesses as a thank you for your support.  These wonderful businesses have provided gifts that we will auction off in early November.

You can donate directly from our website by just clicking on the "Donate Now" button on any page.   Mark Hand Up Gala in the purpose line for your donation, and you will be entered in the drawing.  We will be sending out invitations next week.  We hope that you will support this event.

Hand Up Gala a Success

182 Guests Served At the 2010 Hand Up Gala

The Gala took place on Tuesday November 9 at the Cosgrove Center. We have posted two pages of pictures on our website for the public to see the event. There is still an opportunity to donate by clicking on the "donate now" button on this blog or on the website in order to participate in the auction. The drawing to distribute the auction will be Monday November 15, 2010. There are also a few pictures on the front page of the Hand Up Gala page.

There was a fantastic committee that organized the event. We have to thank Nicole, Luke, Larry, Don, Cathey, Dominica, Dorothy, and Michelle for their service over the last three months. We have to thank the Brush High School Sound Station Show Choir and Brush Chorale. A big thanks to Chef John Alderwereld and Chef Mark Lyons from the Sans Souci Restaurant in Cleveland for preparing this awesome meal. Vicky Knight and Anytime performed and thanks to the NEOCH Board and Catholic Charities' Board for volunteering to serve the meal and seat the guests. This was a substitute for our regular annual event fundraiser and silent auction. Instead of asking for money this year we prepared a four star meal for homeless people and asked our donors to support the two organizations and this event. We only spent 19% of the money raised to advertise and host the meal (administration). There were nearly one hundred businesses that donated food and auction items to make this event a success.

Remember, there is still time to donate for this event and check out the pictures.

Upcoming Events

NEOCH is Working On Housing Issues

Cuyahoga Affordable Housing Alliance Speaker in April

The April 6, 2008 Cuyahoga Affordable Housing Alliance Meeting will feature Bill Faith, executive director of the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio . Faith will talk about state and national budget issues, COHHIO’s advocacy agenda, funding opportunities, and other issues that may impact housing in Northeast Ohio . CAHA is a monthly meeting on the first Monday of the month (unless there is a federal holiday) at the lower level of the HUD building/US Bank Building at East 14th and Euclid Ave. ( 1350 Euclid Ave —across from United Way ). Everyone is welcome to attend.

National Low Income Housing Coalition Conference in April

One of our national partners, NLIHC, has a housing conference every year. This is the first time in 15 years in which advocates for affordable housing actually have an opportunity to see funds invested in housing. Because of the housing collapse, rental housing is cool again. This is a great conference to learn about the NLIHC agenda, and prepare for federal investment in housing. We urge those who care about housing to try to make it to DC April 19 to April 22 for this conference. Please click on this link to sign up to attend their conference here or it is available on the front of their website www.nlihc.org. See you there.

NEOCH Annual Fund Raising Event

If you are a member of the Coalition, you should have received our postcard reminding you to save the date for our May 1, 2009 fund raiser. It will be at Massimo da Milano, and we are keeping the tickets affordable for 2009. We will have our best silent auction ever, and we will give out the Ione Biggs Award this year. We will have details on our website later this week. As always, any questions, call the Coalition at 216/432-0540.

NEOCH Poetry Contest Announced

Give Us Your Poetry!

The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless will host its Annual Fund Raising Event on May 1, 2009 at Massimo da Milano. This is a wonderful time for activist to meet and hear from a key strategic partner, and talk to staff and Board of the Coalition. The special events planning group is busy and doing a great job with organizing this sixth annual event. We hope that you will save the date and be able to attend this affordable fund raiser with the theme "Hope Blossoms."

In addition, we are seeking poetry from individuals who were homeless over the last year. We are hosting a poetry contest for adults and a separate contest for young people. All the details are on our website, but the winners do get to attend the event to recite their poetry. We have always had a good selection of poetry submitted. The material is usually raw, vivid and sometimes focused on poverty. Homeless people do think about the world, love, hope, politics, and only part of the time their housing situation. We expect another good event with some of the best homeless poetry in the city. If you are homeless or have been homeless in the last year, please consider sending in a piece of poetry.

Mayor Jackson Speaks

Homelessness: Do We Have the Will to End it?

We had a great fund raiser at Massimo da Milano on Friday night. I think that it was the best event of the last six years. We had a great street poet who stole the show. He was living in an abandoned house, but worked every day. He said that he was angry when he wrote the poem about how people act around poor people. The poem will appear in the next Homeless Grapevine, and the poet got to sit at the table with the Mayor for the evening. George Lockhart III said that he was angry and sent in a poem, and then he is eating dinner with the Mayor. The photo exhibit was great with every one of the images sold at the auction. Three out of the four photographers were present at the event. This was part of a disability grant to teach homeless people photography and then have their work displayed and sold.

The keynote speaker of "Partnering to End Homelessness" was Mayor Frank G. Jackson. He actually talked for longer than I have heard in the past. He gave a good overview of poverty in the city referencing some of the surprising statistics with regard to homelessness. The Mayor mentioned the 35 to 40% of the population who work, and the fact that one third of the homeless children in Ohio come from the Cleveland Municipal School District. He talked about the reality that 72% of the homeless population are African American. After setting the table for the crowd, he presented the appetizer with the statement, "There is a lot of money in misery in Cleveland."

The main course for the evening was Frank asking the crowd if there was the will out there to end homelessness? He told us that he was absolutely sure that we had the ability to solve homelessness. Mayor Jackson went through all the great services, programs and opportunities that exist, but he was not sure that we had the will. His focus over the next few years for addressing the problem will be in three areas: housing and the preservation of housing, employment and jobs, and his most important priority--education. Jackson talked about each of these priorities and the places that he plans to spend his time. It is a tall order, but we have someone heading up the ship who is at least talking about the issues (a big change from the past).

A Few Quick Notes

Why Don't We Ever Talk About Homeless Animals???

There is some real passion for animal shelters and the animal protective league in society. NEOCH does not usually get into discussions about the push for finding "homes" for animals when America does not take care to find housing for our brothers and sisters. In the 1990s we did not storm the Animal Protective League when it turned out that the animal shelter was cleaner and more hospitable then the men's shelters in Cleveland. But it is another thing when it is in your face. This week, fliers appeared all over the building in which NEOCH's main office is located inviting us to a fund raiser in support of "Homeless Animals." It had a cute couple holding a cat and a dog and asking the public to adopt a "homeless" animal. We were debating sending homeless people to the event and having them try to keep some of these "Homeless Animals" in their care, so that when the animals are adopted, the family gets a package deal. Adopt a pet and get a human companion along with the dog or cat. Why did these fliers show up at our office? Was this a message to NEOCH staff? Was this a message about the priorities of society? If we had more cute homeless people would there be more fliers for adopting homeless people? I have no answers.

Speaking of fund raising...
The NEOCH Annual fund raiser, "Partnering to End Homelessness" is tonight. Frank Jackson is the keynote speaker. We are awarding Mayor Jackson the Ione Biggs Social Justice Award. There will be silent auction, music and great food. We are full for the event, but we may have space for others at tables of people who RSVPed, but do not show up for the event. No homeless animals are allowed.

WCPN on Monday...
Tune in to WCPN Sound of Ideas program from 9 to 10 a.m. on Monday May 7 for a discussion about Health Care for Homeless people. I will be on the program to discuss this critical subject because studies show that homelessness has an impact on shortening a person's life.
