Upcoming Show
Drumplay has a gig at the Beachland Ballroom on May 4-- opening for Electric Junkyard Gamelan. They will continue to read from "The Big Book of Daniel" with guest, Bill Kennedy. Kennedy has one of the smoothest voices in Northeast Ohio and does a radio show on WCSB radio on Saturday evening. Again, our friends over at Cool Cleveland have a good overview of the event. Jim from Drumplay is trying to raise enough to publish the next issue of the Street Chronicle at all of these events.

Drumplay Supports the Cleveland Street Paper

Marking Daniel Thompson's Legacy
The band Drumplay is marking Daniel Thompson's 76th anniversary of his birth at the Algebra Tea House (on Murray Hill in Little Italy) on April 21. Daniel was a long time contributor to the Homeless Grapevine and was known as the Bread Man to homeless people who slept downtown. Daniel was a founding member of Drumplay from 1992 until his death. The band is trying to raise enough money at their concerts to print an upcoming issue of the Street Chronicle to honor Daniel. The newest issue will be published sometime this week.
Thanks to the following members of Drumplay who are donating their time at these events during April (National Poetry Month):
Matt Horwich, Rick Kodramaz, Tim Lane, Al Moses, James Onysko + Kip Volans.
Next shows include:
April 21 Algebra Tea House @ 7:00 p.m. Little Italy in Cleveland (celebrating the release of the "Big Book of Daniel")
April 23 Sandy Chanty @ 8:00 p.m. Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio (CD "Infinity" Release Party)
April 30 Perry Public Library @ 1:00 p.m Perry, Ohio (special program for children)
Word has it that Ernie Krivda will be joining us on Thursday, April 21.
Also, all proceeds from sales of Drumplay discs (past + present) will go to the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless - specifically designated to go to the Cleveland Street Chronicle (the new name of the Homeless Grapevine). We continue Daniel's work in that regard.
The Big Book of Daniel is a new comprehensive collection of Daniel's poetry that Bottom Dog Press is publishing, and will be available at Mac's Backs Paperbacks in Coventry.

Street Newspaper Featured in Plain Dealer

Angelo Anderson Featured
Vendor and founder of the original Cleveland street newspaper, the Homeless Grapevine was featured in the Plain Dealer today regarding the publication of the new paper. There is a video that accompanies the story on the Cleveland.com website and a photograph of Angelo by one of the Plain Dealer's best, Marvin Fong. Thanks to Mike O'Malley for taking an interest in things happening on the streets of Cleveland.
The Cleveland Street Chronicle has been out for the last two weeks and people seem to be enthusiastic about a new paper. WTAM picked up the story today.
Ben Gulyas commented on his efforts to raise dollars to publish a paper. If anyone out there would like to sell the paper or knows someone struggling who is willing to go out in the cold to sell the paper, send them down to our address at 3631 Perkins between 9 and 5 p.m. The vendors pay 35 cents and they can sell the paper for as much as $1.25. The vendor keeps the profits. Since there are so few vendors at this point, they can make a good income if they are willing to put in the time to establish a customer base.

NEOCH Poetry Contest Announced
Give Us Your Poetry!
The Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless will host its Annual Fund Raising Event on May 1, 2009 at Massimo da Milano. This is a wonderful time for activist to meet and hear from a key strategic partner, and talk to staff and Board of the Coalition. The special events planning group is busy and doing a great job with organizing this sixth annual event. We hope that you will save the date and be able to attend this affordable fund raiser with the theme "Hope Blossoms."
In addition, we are seeking poetry from individuals who were homeless over the last year. We are hosting a poetry contest for adults and a separate contest for young people. All the details are on our website, but the winners do get to attend the event to recite their poetry. We have always had a good selection of poetry submitted. The material is usually raw, vivid and sometimes focused on poverty. Homeless people do think about the world, love, hope, politics, and only part of the time their housing situation. We expect another good event with some of the best homeless poetry in the city. If you are homeless or have been homeless in the last year, please consider sending in a piece of poetry.
